What Was Once Just A Hobby For My Grandfather Turned Into A Fortune
Years ago I used to go to my grandparents' house each summer in Los Angeles and there in my Grandfather's study hung an original movie poster for an old Bob Hope movie, as well as dozens of other posters and lobby cards. I would spend hours in there playing with my toys and pretending that I was in those movies.
Many years later my Grandfather passed away and left me all of the posters and other cinematic memorabilia he had collected over the years. To me these were all images that always took me back to my childhood. I knew they were worth something, but I never dreamed that they were as valuable as they were until I decided to get a new homeowner's insurance policy.
After talking to my insurance salesperson, they informed me that I should get the collection appraised to make sure that I was properly covered. I about had a heart attack when the appraisal came back. Just one original movie poster in my collection was worth over a hundred thousand dollars and I had dozens of other posters that were worth almost half that. Even the lobby cards and other memorabilia were rare and valuable.
It was not just the posters I inherited from my Grandfather that were worth a fortune; I had also picked up some posters over the years on my own for movies that I enjoyed. Some of the posters I bought on my own were worth a lot of money as well. All in all I found out that I had well over a half a million dollars in movie posters and memorabilia in my collection, all because my Grandfather enjoyed movies and started to collect posters years ago.
This goes to show that even things that some people do not think are valuable can turn into something worth millions. If you are one of those people that enjoys movies and buying an original movie poster every once in a while they might be worth more than you think, so take care of them.
