The Amish Have A Tradition Of Making Friendship Bread
Friendship bread is a unique delicacy created by the Amish. It takes 10 days to make. This bread is often made to give to friends around the holidays. You make your bread, and give pieces of the loaf to friends. They then make their own bread and do the same thing. Friendship bread making is very popular in Churches and hospitals.
The main ingredient in Friendship bread is yeast. One day one, do nothing with the starter piece of bread you received. On day two, stir in 1 cup of yeast with the starter. Do this everyday through day 5. On day 6 add a cup of flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup milk, Mix well with a wooden spoon. Do nothing to the bread on days 7 - 9 except stir with a wooden spoon.
On day 10, again add 1 cup each of flour, sugar, and milk. Divide the mix into 3 separate baking pans. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour. When the bread is cooled, cut the loaves into pieces. Then distribute them to your friends. It is also fun to add a colorful ribbon to the bread with the reason you are sharing the Friendship bread with them and how they can do the same with it.
