Symptoms and Treatment for Thyroid

By:   |   Jul 08, 2018   |   Views: 13   |   Comments: 0

When it comes to the thyroid, it sometimes seems that the symptoms of a thyroid that is underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism) can be as hard to pin down as the diagnosis itself. Open any medical reference or check out any web site, and you might see very different lists of the symptoms supposedly pointing to thyroid problems.

In my case, after I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I started developing a variety of symptoms they didn't mention in the doctor's office. The doctor initially described hypothyroidism as something can make you tired and gain weight. While problematic, these were understandable symptoms. Then my hair fell out. And my periods started coming more frequently, and more heavily.

And my skin started flaking. The doctors and articles didn't mention many of some the less common symptoms of hypothyroidism I started to experience So I read more, and I surfed the web. And I talked to other thyroid patients. And I found out that things like hair falling out, and weird menstrual periods, and feeling depressed were all utterly "normal" symptoms of hypothyroidism.

For me, despite the fact that these were caused by my thyroid, I felt that knowing was better than not knowing! Many of us feel so sick that we sometimes worry that we had some incurable disease. I'd rather realize that my thyroid problem still needs some further treatment than worry in the middle of the night that something awful is happening to my body!

Symptoms of Thyroid Disease

Precisely speaking, there are two types of thyroid diseases - hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. The former refers to under-active thyroid gland that results in insufficient production of thyroid hormones. On the contrary, high thyroid levels is manifested in a patient with hyperthyroidism. Both instances are associated with medical conditions. Let's discuss about thyroid disease symptoms (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism) in detail.

Hypothyroidism Symptoms

The thyroid gland becomes under-active due to two main reasons; thyroid gland inflammation, and treatment that involves partial removal of the gland. In some patients, low thyroid levels are caused due to malfunctions in the pituitary gland. Notable symptoms of hypothyroidism are:

Increased weakness

Puffy face and body swelling

Pale and dry skin

Slight yellowish coloration of skin

Brittle nails (both fingernails and toenails)

Hair becoming dry and coarse

Significant loss of hair

Abnormal hoarse voice

Increase in cholesterol levels

Gaining weight without reason

Difficulty in losing weight

Hyperthyroidism Symptoms

The symptoms of hyperthyroidism are observed due to the effects of excess thyroid hormone in the body organs. Since the hormone plays a major role in regulating body metabolic processes, elevated thyroid levels cause increased metabolism. Thyroid disease symptoms of the same include:

Skin feeling warm and moist

Unexplained hair loss

Excessive sweating

Increased fatigue

Increased appetite

Trembling hands

Pain in the chest area

Fast heart rate

Irregular heart beat (palpitation)

Difficulty in breathing

The hyper thyroid disease symptoms include nervousness, excessive perspiration, irritability etc. A thyroid scan is normally conducted to diagnose the condition along with the blood sample testing which shows an enhanced level of Free T4 hormone in the blood. Some of the common treatment methods include application of radio active iodine, which enters the gland and destroy a small part of the thyroid. Medicines are also useful in restoring the normal hormone levels though in some patients side effects are also seen. In many patients relapse is reported once the medication is stopped. In some cases a portion of thyroid is removed surgically. It is advisable to consult an expert thyroid specialist to follow the best treatment regimen suited to you.

Find powerful herbal remedies Treatment of Hyperthyroidism

The hypothyroid disease symptoms include fatigue, depression, sudden and excessive weight gain, enhanced menstrual flow, irregular periods, itchy skin etc; There are many factors for thyroid disease that are responsible for this condition, excessive use of soy protein, radiation treatment of the head region or for acne, tonsils or thymus gland conditions, imbalance of iodine in the diet and over usage of raw cabbage, radish or cauliflower among others.

If hypothyroidism is not treated in time it might turn into myxedema characterized by puffed up face with drooping eyes, loss of hair and scaly skin. Some of the other advanced symptoms include Muscle pain, numbness in legs fatigue and carpal tunnel syndrome. In some cases hearing loss, mental instability or memory problems are also noticed. Myxedema coma, caused by long-standing hypothyroidism could be fatal. In herbal care Thyroid hormone pills should be taken daily for hypothyroidism and within a few months the initial symptoms start subsiding. The dosage is fixed by taking the serum TSH levels and in nearly every thyroid patient treatment spans all through their life.

Children or new born babies are also susceptible to thyroid disease. Some of the common symptoms include rough skin, delayed teething and protruding abdomen. They will be typically short in stature with a puffy profile and will have below average intelligence compared to ordinary children.
