How to Find the Right Dermatologist for Your Needs

Before you can determine if you need to see a Dermatologist, it's important to understand exactly how a Board Certified Dermatologist is differs from your primary physician.

A dermatologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of skin, nails, and hair. Dermatologists are medical doctors, but dermatologists spend an additional three or more years focusing just on skin conditions and treatments.

Here are 5 simple steps that can dramatically increase your chances of finding just the right Dermatologist for your needs.

Step One: Contact Your Primary Physician for a Referral

The best place to start for any medical advice is with someone who is already familiar with you. Your primary care doctor should be the first person you contact in searching for your ideal dermatologist. They can guide you in the right direction, or at least give you a starting point. Also, don't forget to ask the nurses that work in the office. They often have great insights and recommendations as well.

Step Two: Is This Dermatologist Accommodating for My Schedule

Once you have received a recommendation for a Dermatologist you feel comfortable, make sure that not only is his office convenient for your commuting needs, but also verify that he is flexible for your schedule.
If your work schedule makes it impossible to get away during the day, make sure the dermatologist has evening and or weekend appointments available.

Ask how long it takes to get an appointment. Yes, we understand that all good doctors are busy. But if you have a problem, how quickly can you be seen?

If you feel really comfortable with a particular Dermatologist, than you may not mind waiting for an appointment. Better to know up front that it could take a bit of time before they can get you in, than to be surprised when you call for an appointment. Depending on the urgency of your condition, your new Dermatologist should be able to see you right away.

Step Three: Is Your New Dermatologist Board Certified?

Board certified dermatologists have completed additional training, and have passed the board exam given by the American Board of Dermatology. Dermatologists that are board certified are deemed knowledgeable and competent in the treatment of skin, hair, and nails, skin surgeries, and more.

Also, ask if the dermatologist has an area of expertise. Although any dermatologist can treat acne, you'll feel more satisfied with a dermatologist who specializes in acne treatments, rather than one who is known more for treating hair loss or skin cancer.

Step 4: Do You Feel Comfortable With This Particular Dermatologist?

When selecting your new DermatologistÃÆ'Æ'ہ¡ÃƒÆ'€šÃ€šÃ‚¦just like any other health or wellness provider, you must feel able to ask questions, voice your concerns on any subject (large or small)... and be completely honest about all your health issues. A good relationship with your dermatologist is important. Do you feel rushed during your appointment? Do you like the doctor's bedside manner? Sometimes, two people just don't click. That's OK. If that becomes the case, find someone you feel more comfortable with.

Step 5: What Type of Insurance Do they Accept

It's vital to determine exactly what type of insurance your new Dermatologist accepts so you can gauge if you will have to incur any out of pocket expenses. For example, acne treatments are usually covered by insurance. Cosmetic procedures usually are not. If you are interested in laser hair removal or anti-aging treatments, you may want to ask in your initial meeting what the Dermatologist charges for these procedures. The prices can vary depending on several factors.

What if you're uninsured? Let the dermatologist's office know right away if you'll be paying out of pocket. Your doctor can help you keep costs down, by prescribing generic drugs for example, or working with you on payment program, if possible.

Finding the right Dermatologist can be a simple and easy process if you take a common sense approach and follow these five basic steps.
