Natural ADHD Child Treatment - When Was The Last Time You Took The Kids To The Park Or The Country?

Have you ever wondered why kids are so ratty, bad tempered and downright rude? One of the reasons may be that they are not getting enough green time. Being stuck inside with only a screen to stare at and interact with is no fun. Electronic media are downright boring after some time. As somebody once remarked to me, TV entertains but it will never engage. It may be a great babysitter too but it will never connect. We need to keep this in the forefront of our minds when talking about natural ADHD treatment for children.

A University of Illinois study, recently published in the American Journal of Public Health, surveyed 400 ADHD kids, most of whom were boys. They were looking at how the kids spent their time and they were asked to log their time spent on the media and the time they spent in the open air in contact with nature.

The results were clear cut and unequivocal. After spending time in the open air, concentration improved, they had fewer sleep problems, they were able to concentrate better, were less distracted and hyperactivity was definitely reduced. It was found that parks and forests were great places to be but the wilderness settings scored even higher on the scale. The next time you plan on taking your child to the shopping mall instead of the park, think again! This should be an integral part of natural ADHD treatment for children.

I have just been reading a fascinating book by Richard Louv called Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder . The author is worried that the new generation of children are growing up completely detached from the earth and the wonders of nature and this is because our children never get to see nature in action.

They are glued to screens at home and even when they go out, they are clutching a video game or some piece of electronic equipment. The latest SUVs are equipped with screens in the back seats to keep children entertained. They do not even look at the wonderful nature outside the car window. They have lost the joy of wading in streams, observing birds and insects, touching trees, leaves and just enjoying fresh air rather the polluted air of our cities. This is a nature deficit of epidemic proportions and this book rightly raises the alarm. As the University of Illinois study showed, any green time activity should be at the top of the list for natural ADHD treatment for children.

We will have to look at behavior therapy, diet, and other natural ADHD child treatment such as homeopathy and maybe herbal remedies rather than relying on amphetamine like drugs.

So, when was the last time you went out with your kids to the park, or even the country, if you are lucky enough to live near a rural area? Green time has to be built into any natural ADHD treatment for children along with all the other things we have to think about.
