Migraine is a neurological disease. A migraine is a very painful type of headache. In some cases, these painful headaches are preceded or accompanied by a sensory warning sign (aura), such as flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in your arm or leg. More than 29.5 million Americans suffer from migraine, with women being affected three times more often than men.

Migraines Treatment Tips

1. Conventional treatment focuses on three areas: trigger avoidance, symptomatic control, and preventive drugs.

2. Moderation in alcohol and caffeine intake, consistency in sleep habits, and regular meals may be helpful.

3. Triptans are a mid-line treatment suitable for many migraineurs with typical migraines.

4. Ergot drugs can be used either as a preventive or abortive therapy, though their relative expense.

5. Sumatriptan and related selective serotonin receptor agonists are now the therapy of choice for chronic migraine attacks.

If you're one of the people who suffer with migraines frequently, or even occasionally, I'd like to talk to you about what a migraine is and the various causes in order to help you prevent them. Then I'd like to share with you some helpful, nonaddicting, natural remedies for them.

Recent research has identified a few neurochemical associations with migraines, namely dopamine and serotonin. These two important substances are "feel good" chemicals. When they become significantly imbalanced it is thought that this shift brings on a migraine headache. There are several causes, or triggers, that can cause these chemical imbalances.

The medical fraternity thinks that the migraines are caused by a chemical or electrical problem in certain parts of the brain. A key element of a migraine headache is blood flow change in the brain. According to hypothesis, the nervous system responds to a trigger such as stress by creating spasms in the nerve-rich arteries at the base of the brain.

Migraines can not be cured and no medication exists at this time that is completely effective in relieving the symptoms. Living with migraines requires treatment to reduce symptoms during an attack and prevention to reduce the frequency of attacks. Some experimentation is needed to discover what works best for you. If you suffer from migraines you should seek professional medical help.

Migraine attacks may also be triggered by unnatural levels of stress and anxiety. People with a history of migraine should therefore make a conscious effort not to feel stressed or pressured if they wish to avoid a migraine attack. If this is your situation as well, there are natural and medical treatments available to help you manage stress.

One of the most common migraine triggers is aged cheese, including blue cheese, brie, cheddar, feta, mozzarella, parmesan, and Swiss. These foods contain tyramine which can cause a migraine. Red wine and some alcoholic drinks also contain tyramine.
