Medical Benefits Of Red Wine

Nowadays, there have been many researches and studies conducted with regards to the medical benefits of red wine. Well, it is not the alcohol in the wine that gives the health benefit but the anti-oxidant content of this drink. These anti-oxidants are polyphenols, anthrocyanidins and resveratrol.

Resveratrol has been confirmed to be a powerful anti-oxidant. It is proven to be about twenty to fifty times as effective as vitamin C, not only that, it also acts synergistically with this vitamin, as a result enhancing the effects of each. This anti-oxidant also has the ability to have anti-clotting effects that stops the formation of thrombi or blood clots in the blood vessels. These thrombi formation that blocks the blood vessels is supposed to be the cause of heart attack and strokes. Aside from the mentioned benefits of this anti-oxidant it also fights cancer as well.

Red wine is fermented with the skins, seeds and twigs included; this is the reason why it contains much larger amount of the beneficial substances compared to white wine which is fermented only from the pressed juice of grapes. Research have also shown that the occurrence of heart disease and cancer among people who consume a lot of red wine is considerably less compared to those that don'.

Recently, researchers have discovered that the anti-oxidant in red wine prevents tumor development in some cancers and helped in nerve cell formation, that may be very helpful in in treating diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.  Most recent studies identified one more area: liver disease.

In order to reap the full medical benefits of red wine, the studies also identified specific amounts, for women it should be one four ounce glass of red wine everyday, and for men two four ounce glasses per day. People who already have cardiovascular disease or any other ailments should not assume that they will be able to obtain the same benefits, it is highly recommended that they consult their physician about it.
