Is Directory Submission A Good Seo Strategy?

To perform SEO properly, you must always take care of both on-site and off-site optimization elements. On-site elements can be taken care of easily, since you own the site and can make any modifications you want. But some webmasters struggle with off-site optimization. They have a problem acquiring back links. There are many ways you can acquire relevant links. Directory submission is one of them.

What is a web directory?

A web directory is a type of website. But unlike a conventional site, it contains more links than content. That is because the primary function of a web directory is to help visitors locate relevant websites. Remember Yahoo web directory? Before the Yahoo that we know today, it first existed as a web directory. A directory solves a very simple problem, which is to help web visitors located the right website. To do so, it must have a well organized structure. That's why the best directories have hundreds of categories. They are not meant to confuse the visitor. Rather, they are meant to make it easier for the visitor to find the most relevant information quickly.

Under each category, there are hundreds of web listings. Each listing contains a site title, a URL, and a brief description of the website. From the summary, a web visitor will be able to determine the theme of the website. He then decides whether he wants to click through and visit the website.

So how do you make use of web directories to perform SEO?

There are literally thousands of directories on the Internet. This means that you can acquire thousands of back links for your website. Is this linking strategy good for SEO? It sure is. Here is why.

1) Proper anchor texts.

For each listing that you submit, you are allowed to add a site title. Your site title will then be used to create the link. You can use any words you wish in the site title. From the perspective of the search engines, it's as if you are using proper anchor texts. That's great for the purpose of SEO.

2) Back links from relevant pages.

Usually, when you submit a listing, you are required to choose a relevant category. That means if your listing is approved, it will appear on the same page as other relevant websites. For instance, if you submitted a golf site URL, it may appear together with other golf sites. That will help search engines determine the overall theme of your website.

3) Back links from authority sites.

Some web directories (think Yahoo and Open Directory) have been around for years and are seen as authority sites in the "eyes" of the search engines. Having these sites link back to you can help boost search rankings. Some directories have moved on to become paid directories, but the majority of the sites remain as free directories, which means that you can add your links without having to pay a single cent.
