Home Treatment for Sciatica Back Pain

When you are suffering from sciatica back pain, you naturally want to rest in bed, hoping that the pain will vanish soon.  However, you soon find out that the condition tends to remain unless something is done about it.  Muscle relaxant drugs as prescribed by the doctor give temporary relief.   Since the condition is brought about by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve which runs through the lower back,  some form of movement is generally required in order to release the pressure on the nerve, to bring about normalcy.

Thus, movement or exercise of some kind is one of the forms of treatment which can be taken at home, when you have sciatica.  Exercise aims at ultimately strengthening the muscles of the lower back and abdomen, apart from releasing the pressure on the sciatic nerve, while providing relief from pain.  There are also other methods of home treatment available to the person who wishes to get rid of the pain naturally, without resorting to drugs or surgery.

Walking or swimming or using an exercise bike are some of the moderate forms of exercise recommended when you have sciatica.  There are other exercises specially prescribed for sciatica, which can be had from an experienced physiotherapist, and done initially under his guidance.  If done correctly, these exercises can provide great pain relief.

Oil of wintergreen or St. John's wort oil having methyl salicylate as the active ingredient, are useful in relieving back pain due to sciatica.  A gentle rub over the affected area with these oils, or even evening primrose oil, after opening the pores of the skin with a hot water bag,  gives significant relief.

Other external applications include poultices of horse radish (applied for minimum of 1 hour) or mustard seeds (max. 10 minutes) or crushed flaxseed dipped in hot water.  All of these relieve the pressure and pain almost effortlessly.

Certain herbs and  vegetables are known to provide sciatica pain relief, when taken internally.   Thus, the juice of potato and celery leaves is an effective remedy.   Carrot and beet juice can be added to this, for additional nutrients and flavour.

Elderberry juice or elderberry tea   or chamomile tea are good for soothing the nerves. So also, garlic  in any form, particularly garlic milk, made by crushing 2 cloves of garlic in ½ a cup of milk.

Vitamin B1 or Thiamine is also known for its nerve-soothing properties. Common foods containing B1 vitamin, are green peas, lentils, bananas, liver, beef, pork and unpolished grains.   Supplements of this vitamin can also be considered.  Calcium and magnesium containing foods help to control spasmodic pain, which is sometimes felt with sciatica.

It is also important to maintain a good posture, and avoid slouching in order to keep the spine properly aligned.  Any misalignment of the vertebrae can also aggravate sciatica.

If all the above are kept in mind and tried out as and when suitable,  sciatica pain can be done away with within a short period of a week.
