Constipation is a problem almost everyone faces at one time or another. Herbal remedies for constipation are a safe and natural way to get relief without upsetting your digestive system or introducing harsh chemicals that can produce side effects. By taking a natural approach to solving the symptoms of constipation, you can get long term benefits and support the health of your entire body.

Psyllium - Psyllium seeds and husks are a source of natural fibre. Dosage: Take 1 tablespoon dissolved in a cup of water or juice. Drink immediately and then drink another cup immediately.

Flaxseed - This is a bulking agent containing a significant amount of omega 3 essential fatty acids, but its benefit for constipation comes from its fibre acting as a bulking agent. Dosage: 1 teaspoon of ground seeds in a cup of water or juice up to three times a day.

Cascara Sagrada also known as California buckthorn has long been used by Native Americans due to its strong laxative effect. This is owed to the presence of the compound anthroquinones that is responsible for stimulating colon contraction to facilitate bowel movement urges. Aside from its strong laxative effect, Cascara Sagrada can also increase and strengthen muscle tone of the walls of the colon. It is available in capsule formulations, liquid extracts, and dried bark. Never attempt to consume fresh bark of Cascara Sagrada because it can lead to vomiting and bloody diarrhea.

Senna is another strong herbal laxative, and it is a purgative. This herb is often taken in tea form, and it also causes peristaltic contractions. Many people swear by how well this herb works, but they also note that it can make you feel very sick, and that you shouldn't be away from the bathroom for a couple of hours after taking it. If senna makes you nauseous, adding a bit of ginger or cinnamon can sometimes help.

Another important remedy for constipation is chebulic myroblan. It is a mild laxative. Its pulp is taken with rock salt, or flavored with cloves and cinnamon. Regular use of this decoction relieves the person suffering from constipation

Milk Thistle Treatment: The seed extract of milk thistle helps produce bile secretion that flows in the intestines. This can serve as a mild laxative. Milk thistle is available over-the-counter in the form of pill, teas, and tincture. It should be taken according to the instructions.

Taraxacum officinale, dandelion, works as a natural remedy for constipation as it stimulates the release of bile from the liver and aids in digestion and its diuretic properties has been known to reduce high blood pressure. High levels of stress have also been connected to chronic constipation and passiflora has been used to treat the anxiety and is often used as part of the natural remedy for constipation in some natural laxatives
