Foods To Consider For An Acid Reflux Diet

This is a general advice, if you will be on a diet of acid reflux. Eating large meals and eating just before bedtime is not recommended when you are on an acid reflux diet. You are also supposed to avoid fat and / or spicy foods. All these habits can lead to increased production of stomach acid that can enter and damage the esophagus. This is particularly true if the closing muscles do not work as they should. The result is you end up with permanent heartburn.

There are foods that should be considered when you are talking about an acid reflux diet. There are foods to be avoided, foods that can be consumed in moderation and foods definitely one can have. The first section of the acid reflux diet food deal to avoid:

Fruit - Orange juice, lemon, lemonade, grapefruit juice, tomato and cranberry juice

Vegetables - Raw onion mashed potatoes, and French fries

Meat - Chicken nuggets, ground beef or chuck, loin of marble Buffalo wings

Dairy - Sour cream, milk shake, regular cottage cheese and ice cream

Grain - Spaghetti with sauce, cheese and macaroni

Beverages - Spirits, wine, all coffee whether decaffeinated or regular, if all decaf or regular tea

Fats / Oils - Oil, creamy salad dressings, and vinegar dressing

Sweets / desserts - the chocolate, butter cookies, brownies, donuts, high fat, chips that are fried corn fritters

The following lists of foods are considered food safe if you are on an acid reflux diet:

Fruit - Dried apple, fresh apples, banana, pineapple, apple juice, papaya (these help neutralize stomach acid)

Vegetables - carrots, broccoli, cabbage, baked potato, peas, and green beans

Meat - ground extra-lean beef, skinless chicken breast, fish without added fat, London broil meat, egg whites, and egg substitutes

Dairy products - cheese, feta or goat cheese, nonfat cream cheese, nonfat sour cream, tofu low fat

Bread grain - corn, multi-grain or white bread, oatmeal or bran cereal, biscuits, crackers, coffee or white rice, rice crackers

Beverages - Mineral Water

Fats / Oils - salad dressings, low fat

Sweets / desserts - fat-free cookies, red licorice, baked potato, candy, chips

The following foods should be consumed in moderation when you're following an acid reflux diet:

Fruits - low-acid orange juice, peaches, blueberries, raspberries, apples, strawberries, dried cranberries, grapes

Vegetables - cooked onion, scallions, garlic, leeks, sauerkraut

Meat - lean ground beef, scrambled eggs in butter, fried eggs, tuna salad, chicken salad, fried fish, beef or pork sausage, ham

Milk - Yogurt, 2% or skim milk, low fat cottage cheese, frozen yogurt, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese

Grains - Garlic bread, granola cereal, muffins

Beverages - wine, beer without alcohol, root beer cola, beer

Fats / Oils - Ketchup

Sweets / desserts - low-fat crackers

This is by no means a complete list of foods that can consume and avoid on an acid reflux diet, but is a start. When you find that your reflux disease is somewhat under control, then maybe you can slowly add a food from the prohibited list to see how it will react to it. If you make your acid reflux worse, then you know that the foods to avoid forever.
