Feed Me! - RSS Tips for Email Marketing

By:   |   Jul 08, 2018   |   Views: 14   |   Comments: 0
You may have noticed in your web travels that many if not most email marketing sites, blogs, web pages and just about every other type of internet content locations have links to other locations. These links are not there by accident. They are strategically placed (in most circumstances) to serve a definitive purpose which, among other things, is to increase visibility, popularity and to drive traffic to the site owners' other points of interest.

Millions of dollars and thousands of hours worth of market research has determined that one of the most effective ways to get viewers to click on these links is to make the link attractive, usually through the use of an avatar or logo. Ergo, many websites have a row of links in the form of neatly designed button logos, promting the viewer to visit them on facebook, follow them on twitter, or watch their videos on youtube. Another button logo quickly gaining popularity is the RSS feed, which asks the viewer to subscribe.

"So, what is an RSS feed, and how can it help me in my email marketing business?"

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. You may have heard of it and maybe you're already using it, but it's a given that most email marketing businesses are not harnessing the full power of the tool. Here's a common example of how RSS works: Whenever a writer for a newspaper writes a column, they usually don't just write it for their local paper. When an article goes up on the newswire and any paper that wants the article can pick it up and reprint it, the article is syndicated. If the writer is popular, more papers pick it up and more readers read the article.

Here are three reasons why you need to be using RSS feeds to benefit your email marketing business:

1. Get higher search engine rankings - Newness and relevancy are two of the top criteria that search engines are looking for to categorize results. Think about it. If you are a search engine company serving search results for your clients, wouldn't you want them to get the most up-to-date and relevant information available first? Of course you would. When you send an RSS feed, within minutes the search engines crawl your site and pick it up for inclusion in the search results. Normal SEO strategies may take days (if at all) to get the engines to even notice your site.

2. Avoid spam filters - Imagine never having your email blocked by a spam filter again! RSS allows you to deliver email right to your target prospect's desktop without ever being looked at by a spam filter. Your content gets delivered. How's that? Because the recipient opted-in to receive your content once and now anytime you update your website they receive your message, in full, unblocked, every time.

3. No knowledge of complicated code necessary - You don't have to be a computer savvy email marketing pro to make it work for you. There are many inexpensive services available online (and some free ones too) that use automatic RSS generation wizards. It's as simple as filling out templates. Usually there is no software to download and you can access your account from any computer with an internet connection.
