During puberty or adolescence there is increase in male sex hormones. These hormones are called Androgens. Male sex hormones play a vital role in the development of body structure. Sebaceous gland or follicular glands as a result also grows which result in production of more sebum.

Anabolic steroid used by athletes or body builders also lead to the development of acne develops on their face, chest and back. However when they stop using steroids Acne disappears gradually. There are several hormones which are related or linked in the production of Acne. These hormones includeTestosterone ,  DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is an androgen.it is synthesized in body mainly in testes, prostrate. Adrenal glands and in hair follicles , DHEAS (dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate) endogenous hormone produced by gonads, adrenal glands and the brain.it is involved in various biological processes in humans  and also other mammals.   IGF-I (insulin-like growth factor 1).

The development of Acne in late years of life is not typically common but it can develop especially in women due to disturbances in their menstrual cycle or during pregnancy .and also to those who have a condition which is harmless until it affects the eye and that condition is called Rosacea common in both sexes it peak onset is during 30-60 years of life.
Other conditions which can cause acne in later year of life are disorders like poly cystic ovary syndrome .it is female disease involving endocrine system and lead to female infertility .it effects women  aging between (12-45)years of age.

Another condition hypercorticism also known as Cushing's syndrome is a rare condition involving endocrine system leading to high levels of cortisol in blood. When estradiol fails at menopause .estradiol is a female hormone it plays it role by performing Anti-acne hormone .its failure leads to Acne in menopause women. Acne in such condition is known as Climacterica.

Genetics
Genetics also contributes in Acne especially in boys. The boys who developed Acne in school age - School age boys have Acne in their family members or any other family member is suffering from Acne or previously suffered from acne and these boys have an increased number of retentional acne lesion.

Infections
Bacteria in the pores. Propionibacterium acnes .bacteria is getting resistance due irrational use of oral antibiotics.
Diet:cow's milk ,  glycemic diet  which  involves too much carbohydrates,
These factors also play a major role increasing Acne.

Psychological factor:
Psychological factors such as also plays a role in flaring up the Acne. Factor which contribute in Acne development is Stress,
Studies show that high level of stress can increase Acne severity. So there is positive relationship in between Acne and stress. The best advice is to life happy and takes away the stress factor from your life.
