In other words, this type of water contains micro-organisms and a variety of nutrients of micro-organisms. - Water Damage Category 3 - This form of water damage is also known as "Black Water." This type of water is extremely unsanitary. Unlike Clean and Grey water, Black water is home to a number of harmful bacteria and fungi which can cause extreme and severe discomfort or illness. These are contaminated water sources that ultimately affect an indoor environment. Sources of Black water come from: sewage, seawater, water from rivers or streams, ground surface water or standing water. If Grey water is not removed right away from a structure or has remained stagnant anywhere between 48 to 72 hours, it is likely that it will be reclassified as Black water.
