10 Questions Affiliates Should Ask Themselves

So, I was on CNN.com a while back and came across an article on 20 questions that could change your life, or something along those lines.  The questions turned out to be for women, so I forwarded the article to my wife (after making sure one of the questions wasn't "Why am I married to this guy?") and went back to what I was doing.  But, then I started thinking about the idea of a bunch of big life changing questions and thought I would try to come up with 10 big questions that for affiliate marketers to ask themselves.  (I shortened the list to 10 because people seem to like top 10 lists€¦and because it was easier to come up with 10 questions instead of 20.)  So, here is my list of 10 life-changing (or maybe not) questions to ask yourself today.

1. Is affiliate marketing really what I should be doing?
Sounds like a silly question?  For you, maybe it is.  For many affiliates, there is just no question that this is the right career for them.  But, lots of people get into the affiliate marketing space and never achieve any success, partly because it just isn't the right fit for them.  So, I think it's a pretty fundamental question that every affiliate marketer should be able to ask themselves and have a very definite answer.  Of course, I hope your answer is "yes, absolutely!"

2. If I could start my affiliate marketing business over again, what would it look like?
If you could just start with a blank page, would your affiliate marketing business be different than it is now?  This isn't about just wanting your business to make more money.  It is about taking a real look at it and thinking about what you would change if you could go back to the beginning.  The next step is figuring out how to transform your current business into the one you would have started, knowing what you know now.

3. What is the biggest affiliate marketing idea I ever came up with but never did anything with?  (Bonus question - Why didn't I follow through on it?)
Everyone has had an idea at some point that could have been really successful, but for some reason they didn't capitalize on it.  Maybe you were too busy with other parts of your business.  Maybe you didn't have the capital you needed to get it rolling.  Maybe it just seemed like too much work.  Whatever the reason, what can you do to make sure you don't let your next big idea come to nothing?

4. Where can I work less and achieve more?
Basically, look for areas where you can make better use of your time and focus on the tasks that actually make an impact on your business.  What work can you easily outsource to someone else to free up your time for tasks that matter?

5. Why haven't I been as successful in affiliate marketing as I want to be?
This is a big one.  Maybe you are already making 5 figures a day in profit and you feel pretty good about the success you have achieved.  But, chances are pretty good that you haven't achieved all the success you wanted in affiliate marketing.  Why not?  Don't settle for easy answers here.  Deciding that the business is tougher than you expected isn't a good answer.  The purpose of the question is to help you identify the hurdles you need to overcome to reach your goals and then tackle each of them and move forward.

6. What is the niche, vertical, or marketing media that I don't use, but should?
Do you have a website with a lot of repeat traffic, but you have never bothered to learn about email marketing to build a list and get even more out of your visitors?  Have you thought about getting into the Dating vertical, but just assume it will be too competitive and don't bother?  Stop thinking about it and figure out a way to start doing it.

7. When is the last time I stepped outside my comfort zone?
This could mean a lot of things.  It could involve branching out beyond the vertical where you do all your business into a different space.  It could mean making new connections outside your normal group of friends in the industry.  If you want to keep your business growing, you need to expand your horizons and step outside of what is comfortable and easy for you.  The next time you head to a trade show (LeadsCon is coming up in March), make it a point to meet some new people rather than just hanging out with your usual crew.  If you spend all your time doing social media marketing, try dipping your toe into search or display, just to shake things up.

8. What is the most successful business decision or idea that I ever followed through on?  (Bonus question - How can I come up with an even better idea?)
This is kind of a follow up to question #3.  If you have had some success in affiliate marketing, then there should be an idea or two that come to mind as ones that really helped you get where you are.  But, the idea here isn't to just bask in the light of your glory days.  Ask yourself how you can come up with new ideas that can help you take your business to even greater success.

9. What is the one thing I least enjoy doing that would bring the most benefit to my business?
This is your "eat the frog" question.  Sales and business guru Brian Tracy talks about identifying the least enjoyable tasks that have the biggest impact on your success.  Once you have them figured out, start off each day by getting these less than appetizing (but most important) tasks done first, rather than putting them off.  He calls this "eating the frog".

10. What if I suddenly achieved everything I wanted to achieve in affiliate marketing€¦what would I do then?
This just seemed like a fun one to include at the end.  What if you built the affiliate marketing business of your wildest dreams?  What would that enable you to do?  Would you want to spend more time with your family?  Travel the world?  Write a book?  Learn to play piano?  Buy a private island?  The surprising thing here is that you may find that some of the things you would most want to do when you achieve all your goals are also things you could be doing now (probably not the one about buying the private island).  Don't put off the things that are most important to you, when you can begin enjoying them today.
